Dr. Robert Jack Schmidt, 77, died Sunday, January 30, 2011 at the Tieszen Memorial Home, Marion. Funeral services will be at 10:30am Thursday, February 3, 2011 at the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Marion with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Marion. Visitation will begin at 6:00pm Wednesday at the church with a Prayer and Masonic Service to begin at 7:00pm. Arrangements by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Chapel, Marion. Dr. Robert Jack “Bob” Schmidt was born on January 29, 1934 at Marion to Benjamin and Elizabeth (Boelson) Schmidt. Dr. Bob was a life long resident of Marion. He attended Marion High School, Black Hills State College, and graduated Doctor of Chiropractic from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in 1958. He began practice with his father-in-law in the Dr. Edward Tieszen Clinic and carried on the traditions and techniques handed down through Derk, Sr., Derk, Jr., and Dr. Edward Tieszen. Dr. Bobs’s civic activities include: Marion City Councilman, coaching Teener and Junior Legion baseball, Chairman of the Board of the ParMar Valley CC, Marion Fire Department, Marion Lions Club, member of the Marion Business and Professional Association, and member of the Community Club. He was a member of the past master of the Parker Masonic Lodge and served as District Master for the Grand Lodge of South Dakota. He was also a member of the El Riad Shrine and the Yankton Scottish Rite. Dr. Bob was also very active in the South Dakota Chiropractic Association where he served as President and on the Board of Examiners. He was voted the Chiropractor of the Year by his peers. He retired from chiropractic in 1997 after 39 years. January 25, 1997, was proclaimed Dr. Robert J. Schmidt Day by then SD Governor, William Janklow. Dr. Bob was a life long member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church and held many church offices. In addition, Dr. Bob was active in the Republican Party and served in the South Dakota Army National Guard for 3 years. Dr. Bob married Betty Lou Tieszen on June 24, 1956. They adopted two sons, Brian Bruce and Bradley Keith. Bob and Betty enjoyed golfing together for many years. He and his sons spent time together hunting and fishing. Bob also got a lot of enjoyment from flying his own airplane, hunting with his golden retrievers, and spending time with his grandchildren. Dr. Bob is survived by his son, Brian, Sioux Falls; Brad’s wife Pam; six grandchildren, Derek, Ashley, Broderick, Braden, Brennan, and Braxton; and a sister Jan. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, son Brad, brothers Herman, Myron, Billy, and Harold; and a sister, Bernice.
