Maxine Hofmeister, 78, died Monday, October 6, 2008 at Edgewood Vista in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 10:30am Friday, October 10, 2008 at the Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home, Parker with burial at Rosehill Cemetery, Parker. Visitation with family present will be from 6-8:00pm Thursday evening. Maxine Virginia Purcell was born on December 17, 1929 at Parker, SD to Claude Allen and Clara Martha (Shulenberger) Purcell. After graduating from Parker High School in 1947 she attended General Beadle College at Madison, SD. For five years she taught country school in Turner County. On December 31, 1948 she was united in marriage to Lauren D. Hofmeister at Sioux Falls. They lived in Chancellor where they published the Chancellor News before moving to Hurley and publishing the Hurley Leader and operating the funeral home. In 1965 they moved to Presho and owned and operated the Hofmeister Funeral Homes in Presho and Murdo for 30 years. While living in Presho she was employed by the National Bank of South Dakota for 13 years. Since 1967 she was a licensed funeral director. They moved to Pierre in 1982 and owned and operated the Hofmeister Funeral Home in Pierre, Presho, and Murdo until 1992 when they retired. She enjoyed playing golf, dancing, and traveling. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, and a 50 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Lauren; 2 sons, Larry and his wife Peggy, Sioux Falls, and Glenn and his wife Kathleen, Maplewood, MN; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; a brother Tom Purcell, Scottsdale, AZ; and 2 sisters, Lois Smith, Grand Island, NE and Miriam Davidson, Rapid City; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Roxann Joy, and a brother Charles. Memorials may be directed to your local hospice, Alzheimer’s Association, or to Breast Cancer Research.
