Parker, SD—Christina (Van Gelder) Davis, 87, Parker, SD, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 30, 2011. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 4, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church, Parker, and burial will follow at Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00-9:00 p.m. Thursday, February 3, at Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home, Parker, with the family present from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Christina was born on March 4, 1923, at Hawarden, IA, to John and Fannie (Dykstra) Van Gelder. She grew up in Monroe, SD, and graduated from Monroe High School in 1940. She and John R. Davis were united in marriage on May 24, 1949, at the family farm near Parker. Three children were born from this union: Jan, James, and Richard. Christina worked alongside her husband on the family farm for many years and enjoyed farm life. She contracted multiple sclerosis in her mid-20s and fought a valiant battle against the disease. For the past 15 years, Christina resided at Tieszen Memorial Home, Marion, and was an inspiration to others with her courage and positive attitude. She will be remembered for her inspirational sayings, tenacity, and work ethic. Christina is survived by her children: Jan (Larry) Schmidt, Parker, James (Marlys) Davis, Parker, and Richard (Robin) Davis, Absarokee, MT; seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren: sister, Dena Davis, Parker: brothers: Sid Van Gelder, Springfield, MO, and John Van Gelder, Lakeville, MN. Christina was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four infant grandchildren, brothers, Arthur Van Gelder, George, IA, and Ralph Van Gelder, Sioux Falls, SD, and sister, Johanna Davis, Marion, SD. The family requests memorials be directed to the National MS Society and First Presbyterian Church, Parker.
