Mary Higgins Sioux Falls. Mary Higgins died Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Dougherty Hospice House. She was born in Montana to Mary Juanita Kelly and was orphaned at a young age. She was raised for some time by a great aunt, and later at a catholic orphanage in Portland, OR. On November 26, 1956 she was united in marriage to Donald Higgins. This union produced 3 daughters, Donna Higgins (Ches Johnson), Canistota, SD, Kelly Magana, Savanna, IL, and Heather (Mike) Sukow, Hoffman Estates, IL. At the young age of 33 she suffered a devastating brain aneurism from which her speech never recovered. After raising their family in Schaumburg, IL and Savanna, IL she moved to the nursing home in Marion, SD a few years after Don died. She lived there until moving to the Dougherty Hospice House live out her final days. A heartfelt thank you to all the staff at the Dougherty House for making her a part of their family and also to the workers and residents at Tieszen Memorial who also took her into their second family. Mary was a wonderful mother and wife, who could communicate so much with hardly a word, mostly through her wonderful laugh. She dearly loved her grandchildren, and they brought her much joy. Another thank you to the visitors who brought their dogs by to see Mom and gifted their time. Mom was a terrific animal lover, especially cats and dogs, and nothing cheered her day like these visits. There will be a private celebration of life service in Illinois at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Dougherty Hospice or to the animal rescue of your choice. Better still, adopt and neuter a homeless pet, what a memorial that would be.
