Robert L. Wentzel, 90, died Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at the Freeman Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 10:30am Saturday, August 6, 2011 at the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Marion with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Marion. Visitation will be on Friday at the Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Chapel, Marion with family present from 7-8:00pm. Robert L. Wentzel was born on November 10, 1920 near Marion, SD to Charles and Hattie (Dirksen) Wentzel. After graduating from Marion High School in 1940 he served in the Army Air corps from 1942-1945, having been an instructor and stationed across the United States. On December 17, 1942 he was united in marriage to Gladys Jenneman at Chicago, IL. They farmed for a time before he was employed with Montgomery Wards in Brookings, SD and later Jamestown, ND. He got involved in the construction business in North Dakota and in 1973 they moved to Denver, CO where he was employed with the Denver School System and was an inspector for construction with the district until his retirement. After his wife Gladys died in 2003 he moved back to Marion. He was a member of the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Marion. Grateful for having shared his life are 3 brothers, Clifford and Lawrence, both of Marion, and Donald “Duke”, Altoona, Iowa; 2 sisters, Verna Schoenwald, Marion and Carol Graber, Lennox; a special friend, Donna Hayes, Marion; 3 granddaughters, several great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Gladys, son Loren, and brothers Morris and Marvin.
