Vesta Irene Larsen was born on December 22, 1918 in rural Viborg to John and Mary (Jorgensen) Larsen. Following her schooling, she worked as a live-in housekeeper/nanny for a Sioux City family for several years. On June 15, 1937 she was united in marriage to Frederick Schroedermeier. To this union was born a daughter, Arliss. In 1954 they took Fred’s infant niece Donna Sampson to rear as their own. Fred and Vesta farmed the family homestead in Middleton Township until 1985 when they moved into Hurley. Fred died in 2000. Vesta continued to live in Hurley for a few years before moving to the Villa in Viborg. She later moved to the Inn and then , after a fall, she became a resident of the nursing home where she lived until her death on July 7, 2012. Vesta was a life-long member of the Hurley Seventh Day Adventist Church, serving many years as a deaconess and as the secretary of the Dorcas Society (now known as Adventist Community Services.) Vesta and Fred were also church custodians for several years. Vesta worked in the Hurley school lunchroom for about 15 years. She also did home care for an elderly lady for awhile. Proceeded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Dagmar, Ella, and Esther, brothers Ernest and Ivan, and son-in-law Wayne Huff. Grateful for having shared her life are daughters Arliss (Herman) Brooks, Lakeland, FL, and Donna (Mike) Garrison, Jasper, GA; brothers Robert (Maxine) Larsen and Gene (Bettie) Larsen, all of Sioux Falls; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
