Gary LaMont Richter was born on November 1, 1941 in Sioux Falls, SD to LaMont and Ardith (Ervin) Richter. He grew up at Parke where he attended elementary and high school. After high school graduation and a brief 3 ½ year trip to California with high school friends he returned to South Dakota and enrolled in General Beadle College in Madison, SD. While in college at Madison he met and married Marlys Loraine Stengle on February 22, 1964. They moved to Vermillion, SD where he continued his education. He graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Business in 1966 and the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1969. Following law school Gary and Marlys moved to Parker where he was an associate in private law practice and then as a full partner. He continued in private practice until 1988 when he went to work for the State of South Dakota as an Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Game, Fish, and Parks. He retired in 2006. Gary and Marlys had two sons, David born in 1970 and Kelly born in 1975. Since his retirement Gary has been able to focus on constantly loving and taking care of his wife Marlys. He has also loved being a constant presence in his Grandchildren’s lives. Alex, Jaden, Maria, and Flora were fortunate to be able to spend so much time with their incredibly involved Grandfather. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Marlys, Brandon; two sons, David (Stephanie) Richter and Kelly (Tricia) Richter; four grandchildren, Alexis, Jaden, Maria, and Flora; a brother Stan Richter and a sister Barbara (Gene) Kroger; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister in law Marla Richter.
