Roy Harry Eckhoff

Roy H. Eckhoff, 88, died Monday, July 21, 2008 at VA Medical Center, Sioux Falls. Funeral service will be at 10:00am Friday, June 25, 2008 at the United Methodist Church, Hurley with burial and full military honors at the Hurley Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4:00pm Thursday at Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Chapel, Hurley with family present from 6-8:00pm. Roy Harry Eckhoff was born on March 1, 1920 at Hurley, SD to Harry and Anna (Petersen) Eckhoff. After graduating from Hurley High School in 1940 she served in the US Army during WW II. He served in the European Theatre under General Patton and the 3rd Army, receiving the Purple Heart. On December 21, 1956 he married Elsie Ferguson at Hurley. In 1960 they adopted two children, Jeff and Nancy. He farmed in the Hurley area until 1986 when he retired. On December 8, 1984 he was united in marriage to Margaret Barnes at Sioux Falls. He was a member of the Hurley United Methodist Church and life member of the American Legion, DAV, and VFW. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Margaret; son Jeff and his wife Gea, Sioux Falls; 10 grandchildren, Lynnea, Logan, Leslie, Betsy, Kelly, Stephanie, Joy, Tim, Kimberly, and Molly; 5 great grandchildren; 2 step-sons, Duane Barnes and wife Sharon, Sioux Falls, and Gary Barnes and wife Jeanne, Gulf Breeze, FL; a step-daughter, Karen Petros and husband Jim, Middleton, MI; and a sister, Gerry Christensen and husband Bervin, Austin, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Louise (Babe), and wife Elsie.
