Tony Nugteren

August 10, 1926 — July 31, 2008

Tony (Teunis) Nugteren of Monroe, SD died in his home surrounded by family after battling lung cancer and dementia on July 31, 2008. He died ten days before his 82nd birthday. Tony was born August 10, 1926 north of Colton SD moving to rural Monroe in his grade school years. Tony was a veteran of WWII and was stationed in Okiyama, Japan during the reconstruction. After the war, Tony moved back to rural Monroe where he married Lois Mellegaard on March 23, 1950. To this union were born twin daughters Linda and Brenda and two sons Gregory and Bruce. They lived and farmed north of Monroe until Lois’ death in 1976. Tony married Karen Schnabel on January 14, 1977. To this union were born a son, Daniel and a daughter, Jamie. Tony was active in the community. He served on the Marion school board, was a 4-H leader, a McCook County commissioner for 3 terms and a founding member of the TM Rural Water system. He was a member of Sandham Memorial Reformed Church, now Calvary Reformed, and was a consistory member and deacon. Farming and Family were his main focus in life. He loved spending time with his family and had a unique bond with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He farmed for 50 years and especially enjoyed raising cattle and showing them at the fair and often claimed he was “the oldest 4-H kid in the county”. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Karen Nugteren; siblings: Art Nugteren, Johanna Parry, Gertrude Griebel, Cornelius (Liane) Nugteren, John (Emmy) Nugteren, Marion (Katherine) Nugteren, Donald (Carol) Nugteren, and James (Janette) Nugteren, a sister-in-law Ardis (Mellegaard) Price; children: Linda (Duane) Dick, Gregory (Bonnie) Nugteren, Bruce (Tanda) Nugteren, Daniel (Laura) Nugteren, and Jamie (Adam) Boomgarden; son-in-law Wayne Ortman; grandchildren: Cora DeJong, Stacie (Brett) Herlyn, Andrea Dick, Tony (Tamara) Nugteren, Wesley Nugteren, Rebecca (Eric) Galstad, Heather (Brad) Chambers, Sarah (Josh) Sturgis, Tara (Jesse) Johnson, Brock Nugteren, Trent Nugteren, Brynn Nugteren, Taylor Nugteren, Samantha Boomgarden, Erica Boomgarden, and Elias Boomgarden; and 12 great grandchildren. Tony was preceded in death by his first wife Lois (Mellegaard) Nugteren, his daughter Brenda Ortman, his sister Cornelia VandeBrake, his brothers-in-law Gilbert VandeBrake, Robert Parry, and Lester Griebel, his sister-in-law Margaret Nugteren, his parents Joe and Marie Nugteren, and many special friends. Family visitation will be Sunday, August 3rd from 5-9 p.m. at Calvary Reformed Church in Monroe, SD with prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Monday August 4th at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Reformed Church in Monroe, SD. A private family burial will be held prior to the service.
