James “Jim” Chaney, age 74, passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. A memorial life celebration will be held at 10 am on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at First Baptist Church in Parker, SD. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 1 from 6-8 p.m. at Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Chapel in Parker, SD. A private family inurnment will take place a later date. James Arthur Chaney was born on July 7, 1940 in Earth, Texas to Garland and Della (Harms) Chaney. He was the youngest of 6 children. When he was 2, his father passed away and his mom and siblings moved to Parker. He was baptized at a young age at First Baptist Church in Parker, South Dakota. At the age of 12, his family moved to Sioux Falls, SD. When he was done with high school, he moved to Chicago, IL where his sister Gladys was. In 1963, he was drafted into the Army and served until 1965. Following his military service, he worked at Augustana Hospital where he met Linda, the love of his life in 1967. He then worked at Swedish Covenant Hospital. In 1978, he moved to Parker, SD where he worked at Jordan Millwork Company. In 1979, he started working at Avera McKennan Hospital until he retired in 2005. On August 12, 1967 he was united in marriage to Linda Lindstrom. To this union 3 children were born, James Allen, Michael John and Constance Marie. He loved bowling, playing softball, fishing, and a good game of dominos that he was so strategically skilled at playing, even up until the end, he won every time we played. He was always tinkering on a car, always willing to help someone out. He enjoyed his ’70 Chevelle and getting it to be the original set up all on his own, it was always his work in progress. But most of all, he loved spending time with his family and in the last few years the wonderful gatherings at the lake cabin. He was admitted Tuesday, September 23 to Avera McKennan Hospital and then transferred to Dougherty Hospice House on Friday, September 26 where he passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the age of 74 years, 2 months, and 20 days. Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife of 47 years, Linda Chaney of Parker, SD; his three children: son, Jim Chaney of Wagner, SD; son, Mike Chaney and special friend, Tiffany Bergan of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Connie Chaney and special friend, Eric Hansen of Canby, MN; fourteen grandchildren, Nicholas (Donna), Anthony, Brittanee (Brandon), Catherine, Morgan (Brett), Emily, Madisen, Miranda, Brayden, Andrew, Isabelle, Ryder, Ryker, and Wrigley; one great-grandchild, Sophia; sister, Frances “Suz” (John) Trapp of Humboldt; brother-in-law, Dennie (Nancy) Hedges; two sisters-in-law, Bobbie Chaney of Sioux Falls and Roberta Kusek of Matteson, IL and many nieces and nephews and a very special friend, like a son, Matt Ayres. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Wayne (Margie) Chaney, Dorothy Mae (Charles) Gillespie, Gladys Hedges, Garland “Bud” Chaney; two nieces, Paulette Trapp and Teresa Hedges; nephew, Willie Seggerman; mother and father-in-law, Robert and Betty Lindstrom; sister-in-law, Karin Williams; and brother-in-law, Steve Lindstrom.
