Arnold Schmidt was born on August 8, 1923 on a farm west of Marion, SD to Abraham and Sarah (Duerksen) Schmidt. He attended country school for 8 years. He was baptized at Bethesda Mennonite Church where he remained a life long member. He worked on area farms and at Corney Tieszen Creamery in Marion. On December 26, 1942 he was united in marriage to Jennie Glanzer. They farmed in the Marion area until purchasing the farm by Parker, SD in 1952 where he farmed until November of 2013, when due to failing health he became a resident of the Tieszen Memorial Home. Arnie loved farming, John Deeres, milking Holstein cows, and checking the crops in the field. He did farm work until his 90th birthday. Arnie enjoyed having coffee daily with the men in Parker and Marion and visiting with everyone he saw. He knew no strangers as they soon became his friend. He delighted in having his Grandchildren and their families visit the farm to enjoy his cats, dogs, drive tractor, climb on the hay bales, be pulled in a homemade sled at Christmas and going to Freeman for chislic. Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Jeanine (Marv) Spomer, Worthington, MN; a son Delwin (Jane) Schmidt, Parker, SD; a daughter in law, Judy Dodd, Fort Worth, TX: grandchildren David (Diane) Spomer, Debra (Michael) Terning, Jeremy (Kari) Schmidt and Amy (Ed) Schmidt; 9 great grandchildren, Amanda and Paul Spomer, Sarah and Joel Terning, Alex, Carter and Kate Schmidt, and Emma and Stella Schmidt; siblings Melvin Schmidt, Clarence (Lillie) Schmidt, Delsie (Hilbert) VanWesten, and Doris (Art) DeHoogh; and many nieces and nephews.
