Earl John Bormann, 86, died Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am Friday, December 5, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church, Parker and burial with full military honors at Rosehill Cemetery, Parker, SD. Visitation will begin at 200pm Thursday and a prayer service will be that evening at 7:30 pm at Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home, Parker. Earl was born on January 14, 1922 at Beardsley, SD to Fred and Mary (Krause) Bormann. He attended rural school in Hutchinson and Davison Counties and graduated from Stickney High School. He attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD majoring in Rural Printing and Journalism for 2 1/2 years until he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and was stationed at Exeter Devon, England, during WW II. On November 24, 1945 he was united in marriage to Lois M. Overgaard at the Scandia Lutheran Church, Centerville. After their marriage, they lived in Platte, SD where Earl worked for the Platte Enterprise newspaper. In 1947, they purchased the South Dakota Mail newspaper in Plankinton, SD. In 1949, Earl purchased The New Era in Parker and was the editor and publisher for 37 years. Earl retired in 1986. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, VFW, and American Legion. After retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling and spending the winter months in Arizona. Earl will be remembered for his love of people, quick wit, clever jokes and giving out candy. Grateful for having shared his life with his wife, Lois, for 63 years; 3 daughters, Kathleen Burns, Sioux Falls; Sharon (Rodney) Osthus, Olivia, MN; and Jill Bormann, San Diego, CA; 6 grandchildren, Paul, John, Steven, Katie, Thomas, and Anne; 6 great grandchildren, Ariannah Burns, Annabelle Burns, William Burns, McKenna Tuthill, Julian Burns, and Vanya Burns; and 2 brothers, Ivan Borman, Mobridge, SD and Donald Bormann, Sheridan, WY. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Donna, Gladys and Carol; brothers Vern and Marvin; son-in-law, Donald Burns and 2 grandchildren, Matthew James Burns and Jill Kathleen Osthus.
