Jacob "Jakc" Niezwaag Marion. Jacob Niezwaag, 92 died Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at the Tieszen Memorial Home, Marion. Funeral services will be at 10:30am Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Marion with burial with military honors at the Greenwood Cemetery, Marion. Visitation with family present will be from 5-7pm Friday at the Hofmeister Jones Funeral Chapel, Marion with a Prayer Service at 7:00pm. Jake Niezwaag was born August 26, 1922 in Monroe, South Dakota. He was one of nine children born to Claus and Dena (Joffer) Niezwaag. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped build the Mt. Coolidge Fire tower in the Black Hills near Custer, SD. Jake served in the Army from 1943-1946 in the European Theater. He was part of the force that liberated the Dachau Concentration Camp. After serving in the Army he returned to Marion, SD doing cement work with some of his brothers. They poured most of the sidewalks and curbs on Marion’s main street, many of which are still in use today. He also operated the Pete Stucky’s filling station for a time which did business where the Kettwig Electric shop is presently located. In March 24,1946 he married Gladys Wiens at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Marion. In 1949 He started doing some residential wiring for a local electrician at the time rural electrification was expanding in the area. In 1950 he started working for Turner-Hutchison Rural Electric Co-op and quickly went from farm and residential wiring to a lineman to Operations Manager. Jake was employed by Turner-Hutchinson Electric Co-op for 36 years, retiring in 1986. Jake and his wife Gladys have resided in Marion since their marriage in 1946. They are long standing members of the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church where Jake served as a Deacon, an Elder, and as Sunday School Superintendent for many years. Jake was a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, life member of the Marion American Legion, and Par Mar Valley County Club. Jake could fix anything and also enjoyed golf, wood working, stained glass, working around the farm, and many wonderful times with family. Happy to have enjoyed his life are his wife Gladys and sons Dennis (Diane) Niezwaag of Charles City, Iowa, and Dale (Jane) Niezwaag of Bismarck, North Dakota. Grandchildren: Aaron (Julie) Niezwaag of Waukesha, WI; Krista Niezwaag and fiancé Mike Masters of Naperville, IL; Leah Niezwaag and fiancé Brian Wiley of Boise, ID; Casey (Bridgette) Niezwaag of Maple Grove, MN; and Kelsie Niezwaag of Plymouth, MN. Great-grandchildren: Anna, Jacob, Daniel, Sloane, and Cooper. Jake was preceded in death by his parents Claus & Dena; a daughter Diane in 1976; three sisters: Louise Beatty, Marie White, and Effie Niezwaag; and five brothers: Herke, George, Fred, Henry, and Leonard Niezwaag.
