Eugene Ortman

June 26, 1932 — January 23, 2009

Eugene “Butch” Ortman, 76, died Friday, January 23, 2009 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30am Monday, January 26, 2009 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Marion. Visitation will be from 2-6:00pm Sunday at Heritage Funeral Home with a Liturgical Wake to be said at 7:30pm Sunday evening at the church. Eugene Ortman was born on July 26, 1932 at Dolton, SD to Elias and Mary (Ensz) Ortman. He attended grade school at Monroe and graduated from Marion High School in 1950. From 1952-1956 he served in the US Navy and spent 42 months at sea aboard the cruiser USS Baltimore. On November 12, 1955 he was united in marriage to Noreen “Dolly” Dains at Mare Island, CA. Since 1960 they have lived in Sioux Falls where he was employed by the National Weather Service for 35 years, retiring in 1988. After his retirement he kept busy with several part time jobs. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, American Legion, VFW, and volunteered at the VA and St. Vincent DePaul. He enjoyed attending reunions of the USS Baltimore in which he recorded the history of the ship. He also put together the Ortman family genealogy. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Dolly; 6 children, Tami (Rob) Thiry, Liz (Dale) Bute, Mike Ortman, Terese Ortman, and Jon Ortman, all of Sioux Falls, and Melanie (Brian) Postma, Slayton, MN; 9 grandchildren, Jennifer, Kelli, Aaron, Shannon, Sarah, Patrick, Mindy, Angie, and Ashley; 5 great grandchildren, Chase, Abby, Braden, Emma, and Noah; 2 brothers, Robert (Lois) Ortman, Oro Valley, AZ, and Larry (Marilyn) Ortman, San Juan Capistrano, CA; and a sister Betty (Orval) Lambertz, Canistota.
