Homer Perry Larsen, age 93, of Viborg passed away comfortably and surrounded by family on Friday, November 13, 2015 at the Viborg Pioneer Memorial Hospital. Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 16 with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. Arrangements by Hofmeister Jones Funeral Home. Homer was born on August 19, 1922 to Joseph and Olive (Kier) Larsen at the family farm west of Viborg. He graduated from Viborg High School and then attended Union Adventist College in Lincoln, NE for two years. He then was accepted into dental school, but due to hard times Homer returned to Viborg to work on the farm. On October 3, 1950 Homer married the love of his life, Ethel Mellegard, at the First Baptist Church in Parker. They were soon after baptized together at the Yankton Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Homer and Ethel were blessed to celebrate 65 years of marriage together. Homer dedicated his time to his faith, family and farm. He was a life-long member of the Hurley Seventh-Day Adventist Church where he faithfully attended until ill health kept him homebound. A strong believer in education, Homer served on the Viborg School Board for 11 years and always encouraged his children and grandchildren to receive a good education. With the exception of his two years in college, Homer’s entire life was spent working on the farm. Homer was a true steward of the land by tending the crops and caring for the livestock. During his farming years, he raised cattle, hogs and sheep along with soybeans, corn and hay. As any true farmer, Homer never retired from his work on the farm and continued to help whenever and wherever possible. Homer was a humble man filled with modesty and humility, with the exception of his consistent bragging about his three grandchildren. He was an honest, hard-working man full of integrity and he always saw the good in everyone. It was extremely important to him to live his life according to the Bible as best he could. Homer is survived by his wife, Ethel, of Viborg, SD; two sons Jimmie (Kim) Larsen of Viborg, and Lee Larsen of Cordova, AK; one grandson, Christopher (Jamie) Larsen and two granddaughters, Cally and Chelsey Larsen. He entered into rest along with his parents and three sisters, Genette Johnson, Evelyn Vannorsdel and Iona Brown, until Christ comes again.
