Gerhardt Schmeichel

Gerhardt Schmeichel, 86, died Monday, March 16, 2009 at the VA Medical Center, Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 11:00am Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Heritage Funeral Home, Sioux Falls with burial with military honors at Rosehill Cemetery, Parker. Visitation will begin at 2:00pm Wednesday with the family present from 6-8:00pm at Heritage Funeral Home. Gerhardt Schmeichel was born on March 15, 1923 at Marion, SD to August and Elizabeth (Fielder) Schmeichel. After graduating from Parker High School he served in the US Navy during WW II in the Pacific Theatre. On May 2, 1948 he was united in marriage to Phyllis Eggleston at Parker. He was engaged in farming, a produce manager at Foodland Grocery, and an insurance agent for Central States Life and Health for 25 years, retiring in 1984. They lived in Salem, Sioux Falls, Parker, and moved back to Sioux Falls in 1988. He was a member of Hilltop United Methodist Church, a volunteer at the VA, and an avid gardener and arborist. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Phyllis; 2 children, Bob (Sandy) Schmeichel, Sioux Falls and Linda (Jim) Richardson, Vermillion; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; and 3 brothers, Milton, Jamestown, ND, Henry, Salem, SD, and Roy, Sioux Falls.
