John Ashton Hanscom, 81, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 while at his daughter’s home in Tennessee. Graveside services will be at 2:00pm Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Hurley Cemetery, Hurley with full military honors. Arrangements by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Chapel, Hurley. John Ashton Hanscom was born on January 2, 1928 at Rumford, Maine to Hazel and William Hanscom. On August 15, 1951 he was united in marriage to Hazel Sanborn at Hurley, SD. He served in the military from WW II through Vietnam, retiring from the US Army in 1974. They moved to Centerville, South Dakota where he was employed at the Royal Bakery for several years. John was a member of the local VFW and American Legion. His wife Hazel died in 2002. Grateful for having shared his life are his children Bill and his wife Evelyn, Irene, SD, Steve and his wife JoAnn, Stafford, VA, David, Brooklyn Park, MD, Betsy and her husband Doug Roelofs, Whitwell, TN, and Jeff and his wife Etsuko, Long Tree, CO; a son in law, John Callahan, Solsberry, IN; 17 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; and sisters Billie and Carolyn of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Hazel, daughter Kathleen, and three brothers.
