Kenneth Telfer Carlson

Kenneth T. Carlson, 92, died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 10:30am Monday, June 8, 2009 at the United Methodist Church, Hurley with burial in the Hurley Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00pm Sunday at Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Chapel, Hurley with family present from 6-8:00pm Sunday evening. Kenneth T. Carlson was born at Alsen, SD on March 25, 1917, the son of Carl W. Carlson and Anne (Danielson) Carlson. The family moved to Cambridge, MN where they farmed for several years. In 1924, they moved back to farm near Dalesburg, SD. After Kenneth finished grade school, he worked for other farmers in the area. Later, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and served in the Black Hills area. He married and had two children, Gerald and Sandra. Kenneth became a motorman hauling gold ore in the Homestake Mine until it closed because of World War II. During the war, he was a brakeman on the Union Pacific railroad. He married Lorine Kies April 30, 1950. Ronald was born in Columbus, NE where Kenneth was a carpenter building houses. They moved to Hurley and Loris was born. The family moved to the farm west of Hurley in 1952. After Ronald graduated from SDSU, he became a partner in the family farm. Kenneth and Ronald farmed together until 2006. Kenneth was a member of the Hurley United Methodist Church and the CCC Alumni Association. In addition to his wife, Lorine, survivors include his children, Gerald (June) Brester of Santa Rosa, California, Sandra (Larry) Bock of Newcastle, Wyoming, Ronald (Marlene) Carlson of Hurley, and Loris (Phillip) Meeder of Winner, South Dakota, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Orlo, Dennis, and Mayo, and three grandchildren.
