Donald Anthony Dains

Donald Dains, 80, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral mass will be at 10:30am Monday, June 29, 2009 at St. Marys Catholic Church, Marion, SD with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4:00pm Sunday in the chapel of Tieszen Memorial Home, Marion with a Prayer Service at 7:00pm Sunday evening at the church. Donald Anthony Dains was born on October 10, 1928 at Marion, SD to Earl and Elizabeth (Behrendt) Dains. He grew up at Marion where he attended school. He served in the US Army and was stationed in Vienna, Austria. On June 8, 1956 he was united in marriage to Gwen Likness at Marion. They made their home in Marion where he was a rural mail carrier for over 30 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Marion Fire Department and served as Fire Chief, a lifetime member of St. Marys Catholic Church, and a member of ParMar Valley Country Club. He was an avid hunter and eagerly anticipated the beginning of the season every fall. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Gwen; 4 children, Darcee (Joe) Huber, Alexandria, VA, Melissa (Darcy) Kuronen, West Roxbury, MA, Kevin Dains, Overland Park, KS, and Karen (Jim) Lockhart, Apple Valley, MN; 7 grandsons; and 5 brothers and sisters, Alva Dains, Parker, CO, Kenneth (Rosemary) Dains, Earl (Evelyn) Dains, Geraldine Dains, and Noreen “Dolly” Ortman, all of Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Nadine Dirks and Darlyne Dains, his and brothers Marvin and Vernon “Bruz” Dains.
