John Garry

John Joseph Garry, 83 of Parker, SD died Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Oakview Terrace in Freeman. Funeral mass will be at 10:30am Friday, December 16, 2016 at St. Christina Catholic Church, Parker. Burial will be at St. Stephens Catholic Cemetery, Bridgewater, SD. Visitation with family present will be from 5-7:00pm Thursday at the church with a Scripture Service and Rosary to be said at 7:00pm Thursday evening at the church. John was born in Bridgewater SD to Frank and Mary (Leitheiser) Garry on September 23, 1933. He attended St. Stephen’s in Bridgewater and Parker High School. He married Joyce Sandner in 1955 in Salem SD. John worked various construction and trucking jobs until 1963 when he purchased Kapps Oil Company in Parker SD. The “station” as it was commonly referred to, was located on the south end of Main St. just across from the county courthouse. John spent 40 years running Kapps Oil closing it in 2004. He was also an accomplished auctioneer for 60 years running many estate and auction sales in the area and in his later years becoming a realtor. John was very proud of his 20 years of volunteer work for the Parker Fire Department. His lifelong hobbies were dancing and “junking”. John enjoyed buying and selling anything and playing cards, it was often said that he made more money playing cards than selling gas at the station. John will be missed by his wife of 61 years Joyce; two daughters, Judy (Gary) Rasmus, Mead NE, Jane (Dale) Niezwaag, Bismarck ND; three grandchildren Nick (Sara) Rasmus, Tea SD, Casey (Bridgette) Niezwaag, Maple Grove MN, Kelsie (Armando) Romero, Plymouth MN; three great grandchildren, Levi Rasmus, Sloane & Cooper Niezwaag; brother Tom (Ann) Garry, Sioux Falls, sister-in-law Ruth Garry, Sioux Falls and numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
