James H. Haug

James H. Haug, 90, native of Elk Point and resident of the Tieszen Home in Marion, a Korean War Veteran and longtime Union County Veterans Service Officer died Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 2:00pm Sunday, November 12, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Elk Point with visitation an hour before services. Visitation will be from 3-5pm Saturday at the Tieszen Home Chapel, Marion with a Prayer Service at 5:00pm. Arrangements by Hofmeister Jones Funeral Home. James H. Haug was born February 27, 1927 at Elk Point, SD to Ole and Dora (Ven) Haug. He attended country school before serving in the US Army during the Korean War. He served in Korea in the 45th Infantry Division. After his discharge from the service he came back to Elk Point and farmed. On June 5, 1959 he was united in marriage to Janet Stroh at St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Elk Point. They were members of St. Paul Lutheran where he served two terms as president, six years as church treasure, as a deacon and trustee. For the past 10 years he has been a resident of the Tieszen Home in Marion. For 33 years he served as the Union County Veterans Service Officer and many years as the Emergency Management Director. He was a life member of the Elk Point VFW Post 915, served as State VFW Commander from 1970-71, District #1 Commander, and post Quartermaster for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 134. He was a life member of the 45th Infantry Division attending reunions in Oklahoma.
