Richard "Dick" Thompson

Richard “Dick” G. Thompson, Sioux Falls, SD and formerly of Parker, Custer and Aberdeen, SD passed away Saturday, December 15, 2018 after a lengthy battle with bone cancer. Funeral services will be at First Presbyterian Church, Parker SD on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 11am with visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at the Monroe Cemetery, Monroe, SD with lunch to follow at the church in Parker, SD. Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home, Parker, SD is in charge of arrangements. Richard G. Thompson was born July 25, 1931 to Amanda and Oscar Thompson on the family farm near Sisseton SD. At the age of two Dick’s mother passed away while giving birth to his younger sister, Jane, leaving his father to raise four young children. At the age of 14 Dick left home and began working for a small neighborhood grocery store. A year later, in 1946, he began working at Park Grant in Watertown, SD. While living and working in Watertown, SD he met Pat Klabo at the local roller skating rink. Dick and Patricia (Blais) were married July 17, 1948 in Watertown, SD. To this union six children were born. Richard G. Thompson Jr. (Dickey), Doug, Steve, Mark, David & Kathy. Dickey died in 1970. Dick and Pat later divorced. While working his career with General Foods, Dick was on a flight traveling from Rochester, MN to Aberdeen where he met Jan Joffer. Dick and Jan were married on July 3, 1976 in Aberdeen, SD where they were members of the First Presbyterian Church. They resided in Aberdeen until 1996 when they built a beautiful home outside of Custer, SD. These were truly the best years, enjoying the beauty of the Black Hills, traveling in their travel trailer with their loyal companion basset hound, Charlie and spending time visiting friends and family. Dick and Jan’s home was always open to company and they were wonderful hosts with Jan’s amazing cooking and Dick’s storytelling. Due to health issues, Dick and Jan moved to Parker, SD in 2006 to be closer to Jan’s family. In 2016 they moved to Grand Living on Lake Lorraine in Sioux Falls, SD where they resided until the time of Dick’s death. Jan will continue to reside at Grand Living. Dick is survived by his wife, Jan, of 42 years, his sons: Doug (Kerry) Thompson, Aurora, CO, Steve (Lee) Thompson, Aberdeen, SD, Mark Thompson, Sioux Falls, SD, David (Kerrie) Thompson, Rockford, MN, and one daughter, Kathy Thompson, Aberdeen, SD: a Granddaughter, Mary Thompson-Radcliff, Eyota, MN: 4 Great-Granddaughters: Eryn Radcliff, UMD Duluth, Lauryn Radcliff, Breyn Radcliff and Madelyn “Jojo” Radcliff all of Eyota, MN, one grandson, Isaac Thompson, Sioux Falls, SD, and step-grandsons Parker Rauen, Rockford, MN and Shane Haliw, Colorado. Dick is also survived by: the mother of his children, Pat Klabo, Aberdeen, SD, sister Jane (Tom) Torres, Brentwood, CA, along with Jan's extended family: Serena (George) Breza, Cumberland, MD, Chuck (Corale) Joffer, Parker, SD, Helena (Harold) Lawrence, Sioux City, IA, Elsie Schmidt, Marion, SD and his loyal basset hound companion Buddy. Dick was preceeded in death by his son, Richard G. (Dicky) Thompson, JR, parents Amanda & Oscar Thompson, step-mother Magdalina (Margie) Thompson, sister Laura Perryman, and brother Alan Thompson, and step-grandson Shad Haliw. Condolences may be sent to Jan Thompson at: Grand Living on Lake Lorraine, 2815 S Westlake Dr, , Sioux Falls, SD 57106-8533
