Florence Christopherson, 88, died Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg. Funeral services will be at 10:00am Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the Hurley United Methodist Church, Hurley with burial in the Hurley Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1:00pm Friday at the Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Chapel, Hurley with family present from 5-8:00pm. Florence Virginia Christensen was born on August 23, 1921 on a farm west of Hurley to Soren and Esther (Williamson) Christensen. After growing up in Turner Count where she attended country schools she worked in Sioux Falls as a maid for some prominate Sioux Falls families. Along with other young women that worked as maids she was an active member of the YWCA. On March 4, 1949 she was united in marriage to Rexwell “Bob” Christopherson at the Methodist Parsonage in Hurley. They farmed near Hurley on the Christopherson home place for over 50 years. After having a farm sale they moved to the Pioneer Villa at Viborg in 2008. The joys of her life were her family and friends, baking, and cooking. She was an active member of the Hurley United Methodist Church, UMW, and American Legion Auxilary. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Bob, a son Ray (Shelly) Christopherson, Hurley; 2 daughters, Gloria (Ray) Hardin, Rapid City, and Joyce (Carroll) Torberson, Mitchell; 18 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Virgil (Marlene) Christensen, Sioux Falls and Lloyd (Marilyn) Christensen, Scottsdale, AZ; 2 sisters, Ruth Wilcox, Jacksonville, FL and Avis (LuVerne) Jurgens, Parker; and 2 sister-in-laws, Helen Benson, Viborg and Donna Beeninga, Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother and sister, a brother Maurice Christensen, a sister Vivian Jorgensen, and a sister-in-law, Virginia Ebbesen. Memorials may be directed to the Hurley United Methodist Church or the Pioneer Memorial Foundation.
