Marlene Joan Wedell Hintz was born on March 20, 1934 on the home farm in rural Hurley, SD to Cornelius and Pearl (Fliginger) Wedell. She attended country school at District 34 before graduating from Hurley High School in 1952. After attending Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, SD and 10 weeks of schooling she received her teaching certificate. On May 20, 1955 she was united in marriage to Darold Eugene Hintz and they settled on the Hintz family farm west of Hurley. There they raised a family and farmed while Marlene continued to teach school, teaching in several country schools in the area before accepting a position teaching 4th grade in Parker. She continued her education by going to summer school and attending college in Yankton, graduating from Yankton College. She retired from teaching at Parker after many years but continued to substitute teach until her full retirement. After Darold died in 2003, Marlene moved into Hurley. Besides being a favorite teacher to a large number of Turner County’s children over the years Marlene was very active in the Hurley Community. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, very active in the Hurley Memorial Day celebration and the avenue of flags, Hurley Historical Society, and active in the Turner County Fair. She was also an active participant in numerous church organizations and was always ready to help out with any church or social activities. She enjoyed the simple pleasures in life such as going for a ride to one of the neighboring towns to the different local cafes, enjoying her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and meeting a former student and catching up with how they where doing. Her door was always open to anyone, everyone was welcome. Grateful for having shared her life are her 2 sons, Monty (Cate) Hintz, Prairie Villiage, KS and Bob (Brenda) Hintz, Hurley; 5 grandchildren, Eric Hintz and Jordan (Allie) Hintz, all of Hurley, Renee (Brandon) Shultz, Leawood, KS, Ryan Hintz, Overland Park, KS, and Reid Hintz, Prairie Village, KS; 3 great grandchildren Adelaide, Nathan, and Lenna; and her sister Elaine May, Littleton, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Darold.
