Lyman James Miller

October 2, 1921 — June 17, 2010

Lyman Miller, 88, died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 11:00am Monday, June 21, 2010 at Grace Lutheran Church, Parker with burial with military honors at Rosehill Cemetery, Parker. Visitation will be Sunday with family present from 5-8:00pm at the Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home, Parker with a Prayer service at 7:00pm. Lyman James Miller was born at Ryder, ND on October 2, 1921 to W.R. and Estella (Wilson) Miller. At the age of 2 ½ years he moved with his parents to a farm near Sioux Falls, SD. He attended various country schools and was a student at Harrisburg High School for 2 years when he and his parents moved to a farm west of Parker. He graduated from Parker High School in 1940. Following graduation he was employed on the farm. In September of 1942 he entered the US Army. He was stationed in Australia, New Guinea, Hawaii, and the Philippines. In November of 1944 he was wounded in New Guinea and was awarded the Purple Heart. Following his discharge in November of 1945 he was employed at John Morrell and Co. in Sioux Falls. On March 4, 1947 he was united in marriage to Maurine Osthus at Centerville, SD. Following their marriage they moved to a farm north of Parker and started farming. He loved farming and liked to hunt. He loved nature and planted almost all the trees on their farm. He was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church and served on the church council, council president and an usher for many years. He also served on the school board of District 13 and served on the Farmers Union Board. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and DAV. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Maurine; 6 children, Les (Bev) Miller, Sioux Falls, Marilyn Plooster, Sioux Falls, Ken (Jeanine) Miller, Parker, Marvin (Paula) Miller, Parker, Harlan Miller, Mitchell, and Tim Miller, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers William and Melvin, a sister Cora Mae Schoenwald, a son in law, Norman Plooster, and 4 brothers in law, James Osthus, Arnold Christofferson, Leon Brende, and Conrad Johnson.
