Donald Harris

Donald Harris, 89, died Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Good Samaritan in Lennox. Don was born August 26, 1920 near Selby, SD. As a teenager he bought his first guitar and learned to play through correspondence courses and seminars. In 1949 he got his first job teaching guitar and continued giving lessons for over 50 years privately and at various area music stores and colleges. In 2006 Don was recognized by the South Dakota Music Educators Association for his life-long commitment to music when he was presented with the Distinguished Service to Music Award. Don is survived by his wife, Ione, and their six children, Arlin, Harrisburg, SD, Terry (Debra) Harris, Sioux Falls, SD, Lon Harris, Sioux Falls, SD, Kathi (Kelly) Techen, Harrisburg, SD, Kari Holmstrom, Harrisburg, SD, Kristi (Marlon) Jones, Harrisburg, SD, and ten grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Ruby and brothers, Ray, Bob and Melvin. Funeral services will be at 10:30am Thursday, August 5, 2010 at the Harrisburg Funeral Chapel, Harrisburg with burial at the Spring Valley Baptist Cemetery, Monroe, SD. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday with the family present from 6-8:00pm.
