Earl G. Wieman, 90, died Friday, October 29, 2010 at the Tieszen Memorial Home, Marion. Funeral services will be at 10:30am Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Marion with burial in the Greenwood Cemetery, Marion. Visitation will be Monday from 2-3:00pm at the Tieszen Memorial Home, Marion and starting at 4:00pm Monday at the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church with a Prayer Service to be said at 7:30pm Monday evening at the church. Arrangements by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Chapel, Marion. Earl G. Wieman was born near Canistota, SD on September 27, 1920 to Elkie and Mattie (Hoiten) Wieman. He grew up in the Canistota area and graduated from Canistota High School in 1938. After high school he helped on the family farm and later worked at John Morrell and Company in Sioux Falls before he was drafted in the US Army during WW II. He was stationed in California from 1942-1944 before being stationed overseas. On September 27, 1944 he was united in marriage to Kathryn Gunderson at Las Vegas, NV. In 1946 he was discharged from the service and they farmed in the Canistota and Monroe area. In 1949 he attended the Reisch Auctioneering School at Mason City, IA. In 1955 Earl and W. W. Brady opened Marion Feed and Seed Store in Marion where he operated the store along with his auction sales. He later joined forces for a 20 year partnership with auctioneer Vernell Johnson and had their offices in Sioux Falls, Johnson and Wieman Real Estate and Auction. Earl also sold sales with Gaylon Sougnieer and Curtis Price. In 1981 he moved the business to Marion. Earl was a Charter member of the SD Auctioneers Association and served as president in 1974-1975. In 2005 he was inducted into the SD Auctioneers Hall of Fame. Earl’s two sons, Gary and Richard took over and now operate the Wieman Land and Auction along with four of his grandsons. After his retirement in 1982 Earl and Kay enjoyed 17 years of traveling and living at McAllen, TX. Earl has been a faithful member for many years of the Emmanuel Presbyerian Church, was active in the Marion Community Club during the time the swimming pool was built, served on the Marion School Board, and a member of the Marion American Legion. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Kathryn “Kay”; 3 children, Dianne and husband John Van Heerde, San Antonio, TX, Gary and wife Carol, Marion, and Richard and wife Louise, Marion; 7 grandchildren, Jennifer and husband Richard Muyshondt, Austin, TX, Christopher and wife Theresa Van Heerde, San Antonio, TX, Kevin and wife Karri, Mike and wife Shelly, Ryan and wife Kirsten, and Derek, all of Marion, and Brittany Wieman, Sioux Falls; 11 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Florence Weeldreyer and Theresa Gunderson, both of Sioux Falls; and a sister-in-law, Gert Wieman, Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter Amy Van Heerde, and a brother, Hilbert Wieman.
