Berdell Bert Langerock was born on July 29, 1933 to Bert and Louisa (Griebel) Langerock near Canistota. He died on October 14, 2023 at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls.
Berdell was the oldest of 3 with sisters Louvaine and Arlis completing the family. Berdell attended country school and rode his horse for the three miles when he could. He attended one year of high school in Marion and graduated high school from Monroe in 1951 where he was crowned Carnival King.
He worked on the family farm until enlisting in the US Air Force in 1952 and spent time at Lackland AFB, Holloman AFB and overseas to the Marshall Islands, located 200 miles from the equator. He married Rowena Marsh on Sept 6, 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1956 and bought a farm by Monroe where they milked cows, raised pigs, beef cattle and chickens. They retired from farming in 1993 and moved to Parker until moving to Marion in 2020. He was a member of the VFW in Parker since 1993.
Without much to occupy his time, he started driving cement truck for Concrete Materials for 18 years. He then drove fertilizer truck for Fremar Farmers and drove the van taking Tieszen Memorial Residents to their medical appointments. He thoroughly enjoyed visiting with each resident during their trips.
Berdell and Rowena enjoyed traveling on bus trips and to Del and his family, wherever he was stationed, visiting around 33 of the 50 states over the years. They tried to attend as many events for the grandchildren and great grandchildren as they could.
Berdell liked to plan a good joke on anyone which opened the playing field for jokes to be played on him. Berdell enjoyed playing cards with his ‘groupies’ – Robert Loof, Verna and Donna Langerock, Dianna Langerock, Valerie Beckstrand, Alberta Kleinsasser and sub Margaret Griebel.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife of 70 years, Rowena; Son Del (Nancy), Daughters Ravila (Randy) Berens and Leann (Scott) Stratton; Grandchildren John Langerock, Riston (Tami) Berens, Rachel (Matt) Brown, Evan (Kaylee) Stratton, Taylor (Doug) Hale and Abby Stratton and her fiancé Braden Kisor; Great grandchildren Braelyn, Carter and Amara Berens and Jed Stratton; Sisters Louvaine Gortmaker and Arlis (Marlo) Griebel, brother-in-law Dwane (Dawn) Marsh, Leroy (Marcia) Marsh and Sister-in-Law Melva Marsh.
He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Jayne Tillett, brother in law Darwin Gortmaker and brother in law Alan and wife Lavonne Marsh, Niece Sharmy Becker and nephew Jeff and wife Christy Griebel, numerous cousins and friends.
A huge thank you to Ava’s House for their compassionate care given to Berdell while he was there.
