Darlene Schissel

Darlene Schissel, 91 of Hurley, passed away on September 28, 2024 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home, Viborg. Services will be held at a later date at the United Methodist Church, Hurley.  Memorial services will be at 10:00am Monday, October 14, 2024 at the Hurley United Methodist Church with burial in the Hurley Cemetery.

We bid farewell to Darlene (Sampson) Schissel, a true friend and beacon of light, who departed from this world on September 28, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and kindness. Darlene walked through this life with a gentle strength, touching the lives of everyone she encountered with an unforgettable grace.

Darlene was born on August 18, 1933 to Orval and Leila (Schroedermeier) Sampson, the oldest of nine children. She graduated from Hurley High School in 1951. After high school she got her teaching certificate at Springfield, SD.

Darlene taught country school for several years. She had other employment over the years until she became the head cook at the Hurley School where she worked until her retirement.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hurley as well as the Legion Auxiliary, Senior Citizens, and was active with the Alumni Banquet. Darlene lived most of her life in Hurley, moving to an apartment in Viborg for a couple of years, then to Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home. She passed away at the nursing home with her 3 children at her bedside.

Darlene will be missed. She is survived by her children Mary Anderson, Craig (Deb) Schissel, and Todd (Tammy) Schissel;7 grandchildren Kyle (Kelsey) Schissel, Russel Anderson, Jessi (Clint) Williams, Mallory Schissel, Christopher (Ashley) Roach, Todd (Hope) Schissel, and Ryann Schissel; 14 great-grandchildren Ayonna, Lucas, Lawson, Logan, Levi Schissel, Ryder Anderson, Drew and Ryann Williams, Trevor and Nathan Schissel, Carson and Cooper Schissel, and Tessa and Titus Roach; siblings Harris Sampson, Dorothy Long, Les Sampson, Darrell (Linda) Sampson, Merlin (Betty) Sampson, Jan (Michael) Cico, Donna (Mike) Garrison; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, sister Loretta Chester, and son-in-law Bob Anderson.
