Doris Marie Peterson, 98 went home to be with the Lord after a brief illness in her home at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home.  She passed away on July 1, 2019.  She was born on October 12, 1920 in Holdridge, NE.  She was the daughter of Alex and Clara Ingebretsen, a sister Orabelle Woods, brothers Einar and Homer Ingebretsen.

The family moved to Eureka, CA when she was in her final year of High School during the Great Depression, when their home in Holdridge had succumbed to the Dustbowl that drove so many away from the Midwest.  Doris also played the French horn in Eureka High School band and had the opportunity to march across the Golden Gate Bridge at the Grand Opening Ceremony.

Wesley and Doris were married on her birthday October 12 th , in 1939.  To this union six children were born; Roberta, Sharon, Peter, Charlotte, Elaine, and Paulette.  Together they celebrated 68 years of marriage together.

Doris was a wonderful and caring mother who loved her children very much.  She was a terrific baker who made some of the best pies, rolls, and other Danish products.  She loved to sew, quilt, embroidery, and crochet.  She had made countless items for all the children and grandchildren.  Doris loved to read, play hand and foot, dominoes, and other card games.

Doris was baptized as a youth in Holdridge, NE and a life-long member of the Viborg United Methodist Church.  She was an active member of the UMW (United Methodist Women.)  She was a part of the quilting bees who made many quilts for the mission’s in-gathering.

Doris had a strong faith in God.  She was always aware of God’s amazing Grace and trusted him with her life.  She surrendered her cross for a crown.

Doris loves music and sang in the Viborg Chancel Choir, played handbells and participate in daily devotions, bingo, music events, and bus trips to the county fair and elsewhere.  She was an active member of the Red Hats ladies and enjoyed being a part of the Viborg committee.

Doris was a bookkeeper for Wesley’s trucking business and later employed at the Pioneer Memorial Hospital in the laundry department for 18 years before her retirement.

After retirement, Wesley and Doris spent 10 years camping in their RV in Phoenix, AZ and Mission, TX.  Doris loved the swimming pool, golf, playing pool, cards, and musical events.  Snowmobiling and trips to the Black Hills was some to the great fun they shared together with their Viborg friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Wesley, a daughter Sharon and sons-in-law Neil Yost and Richard Sorum, siblings and spouses Orabelle and Glen Woods, Einar Ingebretsen, and Homer and Joyce Ingebretsen, and many other distant relatives.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughters, Roberta (Curtis) Rasmussen, Viborg, Charlotte Sorum, Renner, Elaine (Mark Wittenbauer), Sioux Falls, Paulette (Glen) Hansen, Phoenix, AZ; a son Peter (Phyllis) Peterson, Grimes, IA; 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.  She was a 5 generation Mother.

As a life-long member of the Viborg committee she will be sorely missed by all.  Memorials maybe made to the Viborg United Methodist Church.
