Harold Spomer, 98 of Hurley and Harrisburg, passed away on August 9, 2024 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home, Viborg. Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM Friday, August 16, 2024 at Abiding Savior Free Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Thursday, August 15, 2024 at Heritage Funeral Home, Sioux Falls. Arrangements provided by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home. Harold Spomer was born on August 17, 1925 to Jacob and Christina Spomer in Hurley SD. He was the oldest of 5 siblings, including Roland, Warren, Norma, and Doris. He graduated from Hurley High School in 1943 and enlisted into the Army. He served during WWII and was part of the Occupation of Japan. Harold was Honorably Discharged in November 1946. On May 15, 1951, Harold was united in marriage to Carol Williams in Howard, SD. To this union they had 3 daughters: Judy, Jane, and Jean. They farmed in the Hurley and Parker area for a few years. In 1959 Warren and Harold opened Spomer's Market featuring custom butchering, locker plant, and groceries. In 1972 they moved to Harrisburg and opened another Spomer’s Market where they served the community until 1990. After retiring from the market, Harold and Carol moved to Sioux Falls where he worked part-time at Econofood becoming Sunshine and later becoming Hyvee, working until he was 90 years old. Faith was very important to Harold and Carol. They were members of Abiding Savior Free Lutheran Church where they served in various ministries. He loved to spend time with his family and working hard to serve others in his community. After Carol's death, Harold enjoyed the companionship found at the Villa and nursing home at Pioneer Memorial in Viborg, SD. Harold will be missed. He is survived by his daughters Judy (Wayne) Petersen, Hurley, Jane (Steve) Spielman, Viborg, and Jean Spomer, Sioux Falls; grandchildren Jeremy (Nicole) Haug, Erik (Jamie) Haug, Nicholas (Cait) Haug, Nikki Spielman, and Kelly Spielman; 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter; brother Roland Spomer of Viborg; sister Doris (Dennis) Bahn of Bloomington, MN; and his nieces, nephews, and friends. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, wife Carol, brother Warren (Dianne), and sister Norma (Fred) Nehring.
