Howard Hoogshagen

February 28, 1926 — June 3, 2024

Howard Hoogshagen, 98 of Monroe, passed away on June 3, 2024 at the Oakview Terrace in Freeman. Memorial Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home, Parker. Arrangements provided by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home.

Memorials can be directed to the Reformed Church Cemetery Association and the Lion's Club International.

Howard Hoogshagen was born on February 28, 1926 in Ryegate, Montana. His family moved to the Milbank area shortly after he was born and graduated from Corona High School. After graduation, Howard moved to California to work in a steel mill. On February 27, 1948 he married Frankie Cullum in California.

After marriage they relocated to Monroe, South Dakota, where they farmed for many years.  In 1989 they retired to Bella Vista, Arkansas. Howard was involved in many boards and committees throughout the years. He served on church committees with the Sandham Reformed (Calvary Reformed) in Monroe, SD and the Highlands United Methodist Church in Bella Vista, AR.  He was active in the Bella Vista Lions Club, the Schwan's advisory board, the Marion Public School and served as School Board President. He was involved in the Bella Vista community events and felt rewarded in being able to assist with establishing trails in the Bella Vista area. Howard was very proud of his Dutch Heritage and kept connected with his extended family through Facebook.  Howard loved to spend time in the outdoors hunting and fishing. He enjoyed many outings with his grandchildren to go fishing, one of his favorite places to spend time with them was by the lake.

Howard moved back to his family farm near Monroe, SD in the Spring of 2017.  He was a resident of the Oakview Terrace nursing home in Freeman, SD at the time of his death.

Howard will be missed. He is survived by his children Curt Hoogshagen of Bella Vista, AR, Martin (Julie) Hoogshagen of Monroe, SD, Jeff (Marlys) Hoogshagen of Springer, NM, Gail (Jeff) Kellogg of Bella Vista,AR, Todd Hoogshagen of Monroe, SD; ten grandchildren, Erin Hoogshagen, Eric Hoogshagen, Evan Hoogshagen, Marissa Ganci, Heath Hoogshagen, Natalie Oslund, Cody Hoogshagen, Jessica Prentice, Kristen Hoogshagen, MacKenzie Hoogshagen; 16 great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law Rose Hoogshagen, and sister Joan Hoogshagen. He is preceded in death by his parents Nick and Effie Hoogshagen, wife Frankie, son Larry Hoogshagen, sisters Audrey Hoogshagen and Erma DeWilde, and brothers Searle, Harvey, Ellsworth, and Rolland Hoogshagen.
