Marilyn "Doggie Grandma" Hoffman

d. March 29, 2018

On March 29th, 2018, Marilyn Ann Hoffman passed away peacefully in the night due to complications of ALS.

Marilyn was born on November 4, 1943 to John and Henrietta Veld in Chandler, Minnesota. She grew up on the family farm south of Chandler and attended Chandler school.

On January 20th, 1961, Marilyn married Clifford DeJager. They made their first home farming near Edgerton.

They then moved to the Phoenix area of Arizona and spent 4 years there before moving back to Southwest Minnesota. They continued to grow their family, and raised all 6 of their children in the Murray County area.

On April 25th, 1987, Marilyn married Steve Hoffman in Slayton, Minnesota. They lived there until 1994 when they moved to Sioux Falls to own and manage a signage business.

Marilyn had many interests over the years. She went skydiving, white water rafting and bungee jumping. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and they went on many trips together with Marilyn riding her own Harley Davidson.

After her children convinced her to give up riding, she turned her interests to stained glass work. Her creativity and attention to detail was
apparent in all her beautiful works of art.

Of all the talents Marilyn had, her love of both dogs and gardening always came first. Her yard was often referred to as the “Garden of Eden” and that’s where you could usually find her. Of course, there was always a dog (or 2,3,4....) beside her. Marilyn’s love of animals turned into a dog-sitting business and she was well known as “Doggie Grandma” in the Sioux Falls area. It became her greatest passion.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Steve Hoffman, and her 6 children: Sherri (Denny) DeJager, Ricky DeJager, Brad (Kelly) DeJager, Brenda (Kraig) Boese, Donnie (Theresa) DeJager, Jodi (Dave) Beckmann, 16 grandchildren, and 7 great- grandchildren. She is also
survived by two brothers: Ronnie Veld and Arlan (Valerie) Veld; and two sisters: Karen Cass (Reg) and Barb Olivier.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, John and Henrietta Veld, and an older sister, Tilena, who passed as an infant.

A celebration of Marilyn’s life will be held at the Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls on Friday, April 13th from 5-7pm. We welcome all who knew and loved Marilyn to join us.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the local ALS chapter or the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.
