Marjorie Katheleene Kienast Peterson was born December 21, 1929, at the age of 88. She was born to parents Walter and Laura Kienast in Centerville, SD. Marj passed away Sunday, July 29, 2018 at the Viborg Pioneer Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home.
Marj was married to Palmer E. Peterson on March 17, 1949. To this union were born 4 daughters, known as the 4 Bs, Brenda, Betty, Becky and Bernice.
Marj and Palmer farmed west of Viborg and lived there until 2000. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Viborg and very active in its various ministries, such as United Methodist Women, Sunday School, youth group counselor, and many more. Marj was active in the VFW auxiliary holding offices within it and the Voice of Democracy. Marj was always very busy on the farm and taking care of her husband and four girls. The book of Proverbs describes a Godly woman/wife/mother and that describes Marj. She worked tirelessly at whatever she did. She loved to garden and create beautiful flower beds; she sewed constantly making clothes for herself and her four girls; and constantly patching her husband’s farm clothes. She was well-known for her outstanding culinary skills, gracing every bake sale with her famous coffee cake and famous sugar cookies. She worked alongside her husband in the fields, with the livestock, and yet tended to the needs of the household. Marj enjoyed visits with friends and relatives through card parties, evening visits, and other events. Marj was active in all her daughter’s activities at school, community and church.
Marj also dealt with personal and physical tragedies, but she did not let them define her, if anything they made her stronger and was a role model for others to follow. She witnessed the destruction of their entire farm from a tornado, and then experienced the farm being taken away again in the Farm Crisis. She physically dealt with diabetes, West Nile disease, and finally Alzheimer's disease.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister-in-law Carl and Jane Kienast. She is survived by her husband Palmer and daughters Brenda Jensen, Betty (Mark) Mayer, Becky (Jim) Zirpel, and Bernice Peterson. She also enjoyed her six grandchildren, Rachel(Erik) Turner, Rebecca (Don) Parish, Aaron Mayer, Alison(Lucas) Waltz, Joshua Peterson and Nicholas Peterson; and great grandchildren Sean, Ryan, and Avery Turner, and Michael, Jaiden and Kylee Parish. Marj is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and friends.
