Marjorie Eloise Thoreson Sanborn was born in Sioux Falls on July 6, 1927 to Olaf and Maude (Mitchell) Thoreson. At an early age she started on the road to becoming an accomplished musician and teacher. She graduated from Sioux Falls Washington High in 1945 and went on to study piano and earn a teaching certificate from Augustana College in 1947. She then moved to Hurley to teach 2nd grade.
While playing French Horn in the Hurley Municipal Band she fell in love with a trombone player - Robert Sanborn. On February 8, 1949 they began a marriage which lasted over 75 years. To this union 4 children were born: Keith, Wes, Gary and Patti. Through their regular church attendance and service to others, Marjorie and Bob showed their children how to live out their faith. Together they also provided the family with a rich musical legacy which included hymns, classical music, marches, dixieland jazz, barbershop quartets and country music.
Marjorie taught private piano for many years and was an accompanist for many church services, weddings and funerals. Marjorie was a member of the YWCA, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and Active Generations. She also loved to swim and was an accomplished painter with her works presently on display in many family homes. Her ready smile and sense of humor will be missed by many.
She is survived by her husband Robert; children Keith (Beth), Birch Bay WA, Wes (Carol), Juliaetta ID, Gary (Dorothy), Madison SD, and Patti (Michael) Buehler, Sioux Falls SD; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents and brother Claire (Viola) Thoreson.
