Marjorie Kaufman, 89 died Sunday, July 8, 2012 at the Freeman Regional Medical Center. Memorial services will be at 10:30am Saturday, August 11, 2012 at the Salem Zion Mennonite Church (North), Freeman with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation with family present will be on Friday, August 10, 2012 from 6-8:00pm at the Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Chapel, Marion. Marjorie G. Christensen was born on March 11, 1923 on the family farm southeast of Freeman to Albert and Daisy (Christensen) Christensen. She attended Salem District #27 county school and continued her education at Freeman High School and Freeman Junior College. She graduated from Yankton College, Magna Cum Laude in 1973. She taught in rural schools for 8 years and the last 17 years were spent in the Marion Public School system. She was nominated by a former student for inclusion in the 1992 “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.” On June 5, 1945 she was united in marriage to Orlando “Chevy” Kaufman at the Salem Zion Mennonite Church and remained a member until her death. They farmed until moving into Freeman in 1987. God blessed them with 55 years of marriage. Her husband died in 2001. After moving into Freeman she worked in the public library for 10 years. Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, Steve (Susan) Kaufman, Port Hueneme, CA and Loren (Kim) Kaufman, Freeman; 2 grandchildren Scott and Dana; a sister Beverly Spomer, Sioux Falls; and special friends Judy Rechnagel, Cylie Svartoien, and Arlene Preheim. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother Glenn.
