LaVerna Flyger, 91, died Saturday, November 29, 2008 at Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 1:30pm on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Hurley with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Viborg. Visitation will begin at 4:00pm on Tuesday at the Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Chapel, Hurley with a Prayer Service at 7:00pm. LaVerna E. Hoffman was born on May 14, 1917 in rural Viborg, SD to Terrence and Mary (Tamblyn) Hoffman. She grew up in rural Turner County and graduated from Plainview Academy at Redfield, SD in 1935. After high school she moved to Sioux Falls where she worked at the Creamery until September 16, 1939 when she was united in marriage to Merle Flyger at Sioux Falls. They farmed in the Hurley area and retired in 1988 and moved into Hurley. Since 2004 she has been a resident at the Pioneer Memorial Villa at Viborg. She was a very active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Hurley and was active as a Sabbath School teacher, Dorcas Leader, Deaconess, and Superintendent. She had been involved in 4-H and Hurley Community Club. She was preceded in death by her husband Merle in 2005, son Terry, a great granddaughter Hunter Cypher, a sister Berniece, and 2 brothers Terrence and Charles. Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Ruth Skinner, Sioux Falls; 5 grandchildren, Paul, Dana (Brian), Teresa, Heather (Brian), and Aaron (Jenny) and 6 great grandchildren, Harlie, Carson, Patrick, Samantha, Troy, and Allison; her daughter-in-law, Rita Flyger, Rim Rock, AZ; 2 brothers, Robert Hoffman, Lodi, CA, and Ben Hoffman, Salt Lake City, UT.
