Carol Joy Spomer went home to be with her Lord on October 4, 2009. Memorial services will be held at 11:00am Friday, October 16, 2009 at Bethany Lutheran Church, Hurley with inurnment at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hurley. Carol was born May 24, 1933 in Clinton, Iowa to Herbert Magney and Anna Cesander Magney, who were missionaries in Africa. At the age of 2 she traveled to Tanganyika, Africa with her family. At 6 years of age, she returned to the United States and lived in California, Nebraska, Illinois, and South Dakota. She graduated from High School at Luther Academy in Wahoo, Nebraska and later earned her B.A. (1956) and Masters Degree (1961) from South Dakota State College in Education. She taught Home Economics at Hurley and Arlington S.D. high schools and several adult classes at various locations. She married Harvey Spomer on June 14, 1958. They lived in St. Paul, MN, Rapid City, SD, Cocoa Beach, FL, Denver, CO, and the last 43 years in Lafayette, CO. Carol had a real love for bicycling, and in 1957 she and her brother bicycled through seven countries in Europe. A bike ride wasn't out of the question for Carol even after age 70. Carol also gave of herself and her time reaching children with the Gospel through CEF (Child Evangelism Fellowship). For 42 years she worked non-stop with Good News Clubs, 5-Day Clubs and teacher workshops, and was director for a two county area for 18 of those years. She especially loved to reach children with the Good News of Jesus' life, death and resurrection, but it wasn't uncommon to find her speaking to everyone about His love for them. Carol was also a 4-H club leader for 15 years. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, her brother Edgar Magney of Sacramento, CA, her two sons Dan and David, both of Lafayette, CO, two daughters Donna (Andy) Armbrecht of Williamsburg, IA, Dorothy (Lauren) Walter of Fort Morgan, CO, and her nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, two brothers, Herbert and Gordon Magney, and one sister, Dorothy Youngdale.
