Arthur Wirth, 93 of Viborg, passed away on August 29, 2024 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home, Viborg. Funeral Service will be at 10:00 AM Friday, September 6, 2024 at the Spring Valley Lutheran Church, rural Viborg. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Thursday, September 5, 2024 at the church with a Prayer Service at 7:00PM. Arrangements provided by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home. In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be directed to the family to be put towards a project In Memory of Art.
Arthur Edwin Wirth was born on August 2, 1931 to Henry and Anna (Spomer) Wirth in Hurley, SD. Art was the third child joining brother Robert and sister Bernice. He was baptized on August 18, 1931, at Zion Lutheran Church rural Hurley. His family was later joined by Ralph, Kathryn, and Eldon. He was confirmed on August 8, 1946 also at Zion Lutheran Church. As a boy he helped with chores, played and fished in the creek on the family farm. He attended grade school District 38. Art graduated from Hurley High School in May of 1949. After high school he worked for Dick Jelinick, the International Dealer in Hurley, putting new machinery together. On June 16th, 1952, Art was called to serve in the U.S. Army. After basic training at Breckenridge, KY, Art served in Hanna, Germany for 18 months. Art attained the rank of Corporal and was Honorably discharged in May 1954. On June 27, 1954, Art married Lois May Gruntman at First English Lutheran Church in Centerville, SD. Together they began dairy farming. In the fall of 1970, they purchased their farm near Viborg. Art worked at the Viborg Creamery and Viborg Repair and Towing. Art and May bought their retirement home in Viborg in 1997. Art worked for the City of Viborg after moving to town as the summer Maintenance Man. Art was a quiet man who loved God, his family and friends. He enjoyed woodworking, feeding the birds, playing cards and working puzzles. Art also served as Commander of Post 117 in Viborg.
Art will be missed. He is survived by his 3 sons, Mike (Lois Ann), Greg (Sue), Matt (Sharon), all of Viborg; 2 daughters, Shelley Wray, Viborg and Cindy (James) Buss, Hartford; 19 grandchildren, Amanda Dressler, Adam (Jessica) Wirth, Katie (Richie) Soto, Megan (Dustin) Knudson, Matt (Liz) Schroeder, Eric (Betsy) Schroeder, Chris Schriever (Ed Palmieri), Rachel (Lucas) Penning, Tiffany Schriever, Kyle Jones, Allison DiLeo, Jessica (Dustin) Haase, Lauren Buss, Adrian Buss, Alex Buss, Penny (Kyle) Burns, David Kelley, Stephen Arthur Wirth, and Annie May Wirth (Kayde Bartels); 29 great-grandchildren Roy, Christopher, Justin, James, Adam Jr., Ryker Konnerup, Finnegan Soto, Brooklyn, Hannah, Abigail and Lexi Schroeder and Hazel Schroeder, Angel Penning, Hailey (Kaleb) Huerta, Michael, Ella, Julie DiLeo, Natalie, Paige, and Neil Haase, Maggie, Violet, and Walter Burns, Harper and Marshall Kelley, Gavin and Helen Palmieri- Schriever, Josie and Willa Bloom; 1 great-great-grandson Huerta due in October; brothers Robert of Viborg and Eldon (Cheryl) of Hurley, sister Kathy (Chuck) Gruber of Beloit, WI; sister-in-law Marilyn Wirth of Hurley; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Art is preceded in death by his wife May, parents Henry and Anna Wirth, sons-in-law Mike Jones and Tom Wray, sister Bernice (Edwin) Knudson, and brother Ralph Wirth.
