Galin Simonsen

Galin Simonsen, 74 of Hurley, passed away on March 6, 2023 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls surrounded by his family. Funeral Service will be at 10:00 AM Monday, March 13, 2023 at Scandia Lutheran Church, Centerville. Burial to follow at the Hurley City Cemtery, with a lunch at the Hurley American Legion. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Sunday, March 12, 2023 at the church with a prayer service starting at 7:00 PM. Arrangements provided by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home.

Galin James Simonsen was born on December 6, 1948 to Allen and Margie (Johnson) Simonsen. He was the third of 12 children. He attended country school through the 8 th grade, and then was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served as an Engineer in Europe. After he was honorable discharged, he drove truck around the area. Galin had his own business for many years before working for Rechnagel Construction. After retiring from driving, Galin started helping on the Hagena Farm in the spring and fall.

On June 12, 1976, Galin was united in marriage to Charlotte Johnson in Hurley, SD. To this union they have 2 children: Rebecca and Cory. Galin loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. They spent many days fishing along the river, where he got the nickname “Old Man Rivers”. Galin’s other hobby was wood working. He spent many hours working on projects for family and friends, even building a rocking chair. He is an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan. Every year in January, he and Charlotte would go South for a couple weeks and enjoy the sunshine.

Galin will be missed. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Charlotte of Hurley; children Rebecca of Sioux Falls, and Cory (Beth) of Centerville; grandchildren Aubrie, Gavin, Anniston, Parker, and Blayke Simonsen; 8 brothers and sisters, Ordell, Kenny, Kevin, Todd, Debra, Roxanne, Sherie and Caralee; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Galin was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.
