Robert "Bob" Schoenwald

Bob Schoenwald, 65 of Marion, passed away on February 8, 2023 at the Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls. Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 PM Monday, February 20, 2023 at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church Hall, Marion. Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM. Arrangements provided by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home.

Robert Dale Schoenwald was born on January 20, 1958 in Freeman, SD to Dave and Marian (Deckert) Schoenwald. He joined big brothers Darwin and Elton “Kraut” and was followed by Marlin. Bob attended grade school at Schlosser School #15 near his home, having to walk up hill both ways. He graduated from Marion High School in 1976, where he participated in football and wrestling. After high school, he started working at Siouxland Scale as a foreman and spent his career working in different agricultural-related jobs from Aberdeen Grain Inspection to FREMAR Elevator to Sioux Steel, finally deciding to retire in 2022.

On June 21, 1986, Bob was united in marriage to Edie Knutson. To this union they had 3 children Rob, Samantha, and Echo. As a family they enjoyed going camping and boating. Bob loved to have a good time with friends and family and spent time snow and water skiing, hunting, fishing, and running his dogs in the country.  Bob loved riding his motorcycle. He was not a fair-weather rider; you would find him riding rain or shine. He and Edie would ride all over South Dakota and enjoyed going out to Sturgis with their close friends. Bob loved his children and grandchildren. He spent many nights shooting hoops with his oldest granddaughter, Saige, when she would visit.

Bob was proud of his Low German heritage. He used that Low German stubbornness to beat cancer twice, after being told he wouldn’t both times. In December 2022, he put up another fight against cancer. On February 8 ^th , 2023, he left this world and entered the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, while surrounded by his family.

Bob is survived by his wife Edie, children Echo (Ross) Deelstra of Tea, and Rob (Kathy Gums) Schoenwald of Sioux Falls; grandchildren Saige, Sequoia, Declan, and Urijah Deelstra and Trey and Taya Schoenwald; brothers Elton of Marion and Marlin of Vermillion; father-in-law Richard Knutson of Marion; brother-in-law Chris Knutson of Sioux Falls; and sister-in-law Tanya (Randy) Knutson of Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents Dave and Marian Schoenwald; daughter Samantha Schoenwald; granddaughter Mavi Deelstra; brother Darwin Schoenwald; mother-in-law Mavis Knutson; and brother-in-law Mike Knutson.
